OUR MISSION
SECOND CHANCE HEROES
“To collaborate with laboratories and animal shelters to reduce the number of rats euthanized by placing retired rats into loving pet homes and serving our community as a resource for homeless rats in all circumstances.”
Here at Second Chance Heroes,
we know that anyone can be a hero.
Our name reflects a simple truth: sometimes the animals we rescue end up rescuing us. These small companions often become our heroes — bringing purpose, joy, and hope when we need it most.
At Second Chance Heroes, we believe in second chances — for animals who deserve love, and for the people who find healing through them.
Together, we save each other.
Second Chance Heroes Rat Adoptions is 501c (3) non-profit rat rescue operating in Richmond, Virginia.
We are a foster-based rescue, which means that we do not have a brick-and-mortar facility, but rather a network of foster homes where different groups of rats are housed.
LABORATORY RATS
At Second Chance Heroes, we are dedicated to working closely with laboratories to foster rats who have retired from research. We strive to place them into loving homes that understand the unique needs of helping former laboratory rats adjust to life as companions.
SHELTERS
Each year, we bring in around one hundred rats from our shelter partners all over the state, as well as out-of-state shelters in need. Between 70-90% of the rats coming through Second Chance Heroes have been transferred in from our shelter partners.
MAKING CONNECTIONS
As Second Chance Heroes is a small, foster-based rescue, we may not always be able to bring rats directly into our care. In those cases, there are other ways we can help! From courtesy listings on our social media pages to connecting guardians with other shelters, Second Chance Heroes can be a resource.
